About Sinus Lifts
Over time, the sinus expands taking over the bone space around tooth roots. The loss of bone volume in this way is very common but if teeth are missing it can inhibit a patient’s options for implants. Fortunately, the bone space can be re-acquired with a sinus lift. A sinus lift involves moving the floor of the sinus upwards to where it should be and replacing this re-acquired space with biocompatible materials that induce new bone growth.
This technique sensitive procedure allows for the buildup of bone into the sinus spaces, recovering the volume of bone needed for placing implants. Expertise in this surgery is the backbone to a solid periodontal practice.
This treatment takes one hour. Due to the number of possible complications in this particularly technique sensitive procedure (refer to Suzanne’s paper), nearly all cases are best carried out under IV sedation (link to sedation page). It takes 6-11 months for grafting to heal before dental implants can be placed.
